The Hazleton Unico Club will renew the area’s Italian heritage with the 10th annual Bell’ Italia Festivale Sept. 16 and 17 at Hazle Twp. Community Park. The event will feature entertainment, the best meatball in the area contest, a spaghetti eating contest, the traditional Italian games of fingers and bocce ball, carnival kiddie rides and tricky trays.
All Hazleton area residents of Italian descent over the age of 85 will be honored. But their names have to be submitted to Dan DeMelfi at P.O. Box 482, Hazleton. There will also be a wide array of food. Aside from Unico’s fried dough, the menu includes pasta, pizza, barbecue, fried potato cakes, beef and cheddar, sausage and peppers, halupki, empanadas, porchetta, pulled pork, kielbasa, pierogies, ice cream, fried Oreos, funnel cakes, Italian pastries, stromboli, fried shrimp, soups and more.
