Newark’s loss is Sussex County’s gain as Skylands Stadium prepares to unveil a statue of Christopher Columbus. The symbol of Italian heritage previously occupied a spot at Columbus Plaza on Bloomfield Avenue in Newark, according to Skylands Stadium officials.
The owner of the Sussex County Miners Al Dorso will be at the event during which the field inside Skylands Stadius will be renamed “Columbus Field.” The ceremony and celebration is free and will run from 3 until 6 p.m. and will Knights of Columbus Honor Guards in uniform, 1,000 Italian flags given away, Frankford Township representatives, Sparta Unico, Italian American Club of Canal Walk/ Somerset.
