Stephanie Longo has spent a lifetime celebrating her family’s genealogy, which stretches back from Northeast Pennsylvania to ancestral roots in Guardia Lombardi, Avellino Province, Italy. Now, the local historian and writer hopes to encourage others to take an interest in the area’s rich Italian heritage with her third book, “Images of Modern America: Italians in Lackawanna County,” which was released by Arcadia Publishing this year.
The 96-page collection features photos and facts that depict modern history, from 1976 forward, she noted. Longo points to local traditions such as Jessup’s La Corsa dei Ceri, more commonly known as the Race of the Saints at St. Ubaldo Day, and the annual La Festa Italiana held on Lackawanna County Courthouse Square in downtown Scranton every Labor Day weekend.
