The Italian American Museum of Los Angeles seeks qualified undergraduate or graduate students in the fields of Museum Studies, History, Art History (or other Social Science), Liberal Arts, Urban Planning, and other relevant areas of study to serve as a research scholar or collections intern.

ABOUT THE ITALIAN AMERICAN MUSEUM OF LOS ANGELES (IAMLA) Italian American Museum of Los Angeles is located in the Italian Hall overlooking Olvera Street in Downtown Los Angeles. Built in 1908, the Italian Hall is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is the oldest remaining structure from Los Angeles’ little Italy. The Italian American Museum of Los Angeles documents the history and ongoing contributions of Italian Americans and Italians in the context of our multi-ethnic nation.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION The project requires the intern/research assistant to: a) Conduct supervised research on topics related to the history of Italians in Southern California and/or themes relevant to the museum’s exhibitions and/or b) Work with the museum’s photographic, archival, and artifact collection, cataloging items using a museum collections software program. Training will be provided.

QUALIFICATIONS OF APPLICANT: The project requires well-organized, highly reliable, motivated candidates who demonstrate initiative and a desire to conduct advanced research. While this position is non-paid, the intern/research assistant will gain valuable skills, experience, and knowledge of Los Angeles’ diverse historical landscape and work experience in a museum/archive environment. Applicants must be reliable, hard-working, and have some research experience.
