John Anselmo, Joe Zarba, and Francesco Bonavita PhD, present their book "The Newsstand", a novel about teenagers coming of age in the '60s on the tough streets of New York City's Little Italy.

The Newsstand, a novel by JJ Anselmo, is mostly set in New York's Little Italy in 1963 – a time when Little Italy was much different from what it is today. It was then a place where many storefronts – which are now trendy boutiques or restaurants – served as numbers drops for the neighborhood's numerous bookies; or places for the distribution of hijacked goods (open only to neighborhood people); or social clubs frequented by members of the "Five Families" and wannabe low-level hoods.

It was also a place where having street smarts was held in much higher esteem than having "school smarts"; and a place where scamming was a way of life for some.

Francesco Bonavita, PhD will discuss the themes of the novel. Joe Zarba, photographer, will show his photographs of the various places mentioned in the book.
