Lower Fairfield County is a place whose Italian roots run deep. The 1880s brought nearly four million Italians to America, according to figures from the Library of Congress. From Milan to Palermo and everywhere in between, Italian men and women sought to escape a stagnant economy, failing agriculture and a threatening political climate.
They boarded crowded boats and braved the Atlantic, settling in cities and towns throughout the U.S. Among those millions were a handful of immigrants from two rural Italian towns who would become integral parts of Fairfield County's cultural and economic landscape.
