There will be something special in the air at the 2013 Mamma Mia Cook-off on Nov. 9 when the night sky is illuminated with sparkling paper lanterns.
In addition to the sumptuous feast of Italian food, this year's event will celebrate Rificolona, the Florentine paper lantern parade.
"Each year we look for new ways to add to the authenticity of our celebration of Daphne's Italian heritage," said Denise D'Oliveira, executive director of Supporting Educational Enrichment in Daphne's Schools (SEEDS).
She explained that Rificolona dates back to the 16th century when local farmers around Florence paraded into town to sell their harvest bounty on the eve of Mary's Feast Day. "Because they left their homes before daybreak, they would carry homemade lanterns to light the way."
