Ristorante Scala Del Nonna, By Way Of NYC’s Scalini Fedeli, Coming To Montclair NJ

scalaby Owen Satran

Montclair, your prayers have been answered! Just what downtown Montclair needed — another Italian restaurant!

Well, maybe not, but before you roll your eyes, check the dish on this new spot. The restaurant is headed by renowned chef Michael Cetrulo, whose impressive pedigree suggests that Ristorante Scala Del Nonna might just become the talk of the town. Cetrulo began working in restaurants when he was only 13, and by the time he was 23, in 1990, he opened his own- Madison’s Il Mondo Vecchio. He then trained for a year in Italy in an attempt to modernize his culinary repertoire, and went on start four more restaurants, including the popular Scalini Fedeli in 1995.

There is so much to be dismayed about when considering the world at large right now, reading the daily news is enough to drag one deep into a swamp of despair. One of restaurateur Rich Melman's gifts, I think, is his ability to identify niches, up and down the dining price scale, and fill them. The same mind that created Ambria, Everest and Avanzare also came up with Mon Ami Gabi, Tucci Benucch and Frankie's Scaloppine.   Apparently there's a gene for that sort of thing, because it's been passed down to his...

When it comes to Southeast Michigan — location of The Big 3, Woodward Dream Cruise, and scores classic American cars — hosting a successful Italian car meet seems like one of the more unlikely scenarios of the summer. Puglia and Matera: History meets cinema in Italy’s heavenly heel

Puglia and Matera: History meets cinema in Italy’s heavenly heel

by Jackie Cooperman   Long overlooked by tourists, the Italian cave town of Matera is having a moment, spurred by its selection as the 2019 European Capital of Culture, its recent designation as a UNESCO World Heritage site and a timely dose of Hollywood: The just-released remake of "Ben-Hur" was shot here.   Matera's nascent popularity is justified.
