A Verdian Season in New York

Giuseppe Verdi, that colossus of opera and courageous nation-builder, was celebrated in New York last week in four distinct ways. There were important visitors from Parma, where Verdi is venerated. A small rendering of one of his early works got right to the core of his musical essence. And a performance of Simon Boccanegra at the Met instantly joined the...

By Mario Salvini Vent'anni fa, il 20 aprile 1996, a Dearborn, Michigan, moriva Hank Biasatti. E...

Red Vespa's pizza like none other in Iowa City area

Red Vespa's pizza like none other in Iowa City area

Like most red-blooded Americans, I love pizza. No matter what style, or whether it's served at a Casey's or a small family-style restaurant in Chicago, I'll probably adore it.   That's why I had high hopes when I went to Solon's Red Vespa, a restaurant that promises authentic Neapolitan pizza — and they certainly live up to that promise. Red Vespa bakes...

Coccoina, Italy's Madeleine

Coccoina, Italy's Madeleine

Coccoina glue holds together almost ninety years of memories for generations of Italians. Manufactured by Pavia's Balma, Capoduri & C. since 1927, the "while, solid office glue" is an amazing "madeleine", known to evoke distant childhood days with its unique almond smell.   In one of his novels, Italian politician and author Walter Veltroni explains the role played by Coccoina in one boy's...
