Friday, July 13, 8-10pm | MANZONI + BEUYS
The films especially highlight their groundbreaking approach to the act of making and presenting art, often triggering unexpected relations with the viewers. Manzoni physically engaged the spectator by exposing bodies, bodily fluids, corrupting organic materials, and tested the parameters of sensorial experience through the materiality of the Achromes, and the interplay between visibility and invisibility, presence and absence, featuring works such as the Lines. On the other hand, Beuys expressed social and collective utopias through art, and aimed to reach a broader audience playing with the physicality and shaman-like poses of his body, and frequently using materials such as fat and felt, thus evoking powerful political, social and cultural imagery. - Francesco Guzzetti
Piero Manzoni, Artista (Piero Manzoni, Artist), Andrea Bettinetti, Italy, 2013, 54 min., Italian (English subtitles)
A leading protagonist in the history of contemporary art, still today – fifty-five years after his death - Piero Manzoni (1933-1963) remains a very relevant artist. His intuition and sense of innovation are still very present in the works of many artists on the contemporary scene. Realized in cooperation with the Piero Manzoni Foundation and with the direct testimony of friends, family members and artists who knew him well, this documentary purports to reconstruct his personality and outline his artistic career through his works and uncompleted projects in order to explore the secret of his incredible relevance.
Beuys and Beuys, Peter Schiering, Germany, 2006, 35 min., German (English subtitles)
“We are the revolution” is the statement which Joseph Beuys proclaimed his entire life. The director Peter Schiering focuses upon the legacy left to contemporary artists by Beuys, the artist who attacked the traditional conceptual boundaries of art and brought materials such as fat and felt into museums. What effect do his works, exhibited throughout the world, have today? We re-view the artist during performances in New York, Berlin and Darmstadt where he spares no effort in explaining art to a dead hare or spends several days in a cage with a coyote demonstrating his love for America. We listen to Beuys as he attempts to explain his concept of art and promotes the cause of a universal social utopia.
Saturday, July 14, 8-10pm | PISTOLETTO + LAND ART
Realizing utopias through art may be seen as the shared effort of both Pistoletto and the Land Art artists, who both created new spaces in which lyrical, social, and political utopias are embodied. Pistoletto stresses the indoor space and focuses on human scale as the size to measure the work. On the other side, Land Art artists seek for the balance between nature and culture by concentrating exclusively on outdoor space, and their intervention undermines new ways to approach reality in its extent. - Francesco Guzzetti
Michelangelo Pistoletto – Cento Mostre, Il Terzo Paradiso (One Hundred Exhibitions: The Third Paradise), Matteo Frittelli, Italy, 2013, 13 min., English
An intense, multifaceted portrait of the works and thoughts of Michelangelo Pistoletto filmed during the exhibit at Galleria Continua in San Gimignano in 2013. The film is centred on the work Cento Mostre nel mese di ottobre (1976), a sort of recipe book for 100 possible exhibits and works, many of which were subsequently realized. Film clips of new works, such as the site-specific installation Il Terzo Paradiso flank the narration.
Troublemakers – The Story of Land Art, James Crump, United States, 2015, 72 min., English (Italian subtitles)
Filmed in a desolate desert area of the American Southwest, the film spotlights the story of Land Art between the late 60s and the early 70s. The film tells the story of a group of visionary artists who were willing to risk their future careers and leave a clear sign of demarcation and distance from the hyper-speculative world of art. Previously unpublished archive materials and rare interviews with the leading Land Art protagonists including Robert Smithson, Walter De Maria and Michael Heizer unveil little known aspects of contemporary art.
