Every year, the city honors its Italian heritage on Columbus Day with a ceremony and the naming of its Italian Mayor of the Day, a coveted award granted to men and women who are known for their dedication their community. The ceremony is organized by the local UNICO chapter, a group dedicated to preserving Italian heritage through charitable efforts and events.
This year, the Columbus Day Celebration will be held Friday at 8:30 a.m. at Columbus Square, with a wreath laying ceremony and guest speakers. A second ceremony follows at 9 a.m. at Coe Memorial Park’s Civic Center on South Main Street. An Italian flag is raised and the National Anthem follows, this year performed by Chris Cogliano.
