Prince Thomas Of Savoy Celebrates 100 Years Of Italian Heritage

Thhere was a time in Avon when there was little to no Italian population. That began to change in 1905, when an explosion at the Ensign-Bickford Company factory in Avon caused some to leave the company and left a gap in employment. As Avon resident Aldo Vernesoni tells it, that explosion was responsible for the founding of Prince Thomas of Savoy, the Italian social group that was founded in 1917 and is celebrating its 100th anniversary this year.

"Agents from Ensign-Bickford went to Ellis Island to recruit immigrants to replace the workers that left Ensign-Bickford," said Vernesoni, the group's historian and member of the organization since 1954. "That's where the Italians got their start, working for the factories. But as years went by, they established themselves in the building trades. As they succeeded, more immigrants came in, seeing that things were going well here."
