Residents voted Monday night to change Columbus Day to Indigenous People’s Day in town after a spirited debate about the meaning of the day and Columbus’ legacy in U.S. history. That was the result of a heated debate on the first night of Annual Town Meeting, however, a debate on a new school will have to wait until the second night of the meeting on Tuesday.
Town Meeting broke out into applause after a vast majority of residents in the packed auditorium of Marblehead Veterans Middle School and a majority of the overflow crowd in the gym voted in favor of Article 19. While some residents pushed back against the holiday name change, resident Judith Black noted the conversation was uncomfortable, but it was good to welcome such a debate.
