Recently, I was invited to attend Friendly Valley’s Veterans Club by Commander Chuck Morris to speak about my service in Vietnam and to discuss my role as Director of Veterans Affairs for KHTS Hometown Station. At that meeting, my friend Chuck introduced me to Mario and soon after he and I reviewed his honorable U.S. Army service during World War II at his kitchen table with his fantastic wife Mercedes.
Mario E. Aquilani was born on Dec. 13, 1922 in Teramo Abruzzo, Italy, where his family lived until Mario was two years old. Mario’s father, Stephen, had moved to Philadelphia from Italy when he was 14. At age 16, during World War I Stephen Aquilani was inducted into the U.S. Army and deployed to France with the American Expeditionary Force led by General Pershing.
